Learn Fire Dancing in Chicago

Location: Riverwest, 700 N Carpenter, Chicago, IL 60642.

This is a 6-week poi series. It is designed to go further in depth with some of the basics from the beginner series, but will not exclude total beginners. We will be covering many ideas that would give newbies a lot to take home to start their fire journey. The class will touch on some simple poi theory (the technical breakdown of timing and direction), body mechanics (how to move with your prop), and common terminology. We will go deeper into exploring flowers and weaves and throw in some fun tricks and ideas along the way. The flow of the series will bear in mind the overall progress of the class and cater to what individuals need as we go. The 6th class will be longer and at an offsite, outdoors location. We will cover fire safety and give students a chance to spin fire for the first time with experienced safety and supervision.

7 WEEK BEGINNER CONTACT STAFF CLASS BEGINS THURSDAY, JULY 28

Seven-week Intro to Fire Dance Series - Pyrotechniq

Location: Riverwest, 700 N Carpenter, Chicago, IL 60642.

Join us over the course of seven weeks as we progress through a step-by-step process of developing beginner staff skills as well as a technical and practical approach to fire safety. We will also discuss our relationship to fire, how the fire element plays into our inner lives, and express ourselves with fire through fire staff spinning on the final day at an outdoors, off-site location. The final class will be longer to ensure proper safety training and to leave time for everyone to get a chance to spin fire.

Instructor Avi Chertok is a member of Pyrotechniq, a Chicago-based fire troupe with over 30 years of combined performance and teaching experience between its members. The “Pyros” have worked with a variety of student populations. Avi has taught group and private lessons in Chicago and has recently returned from his 2015 season of teaching with Performers Without Borders in India. He is also an FAI certified fire safety instructor and a certified Firewalking Ceremony Facilitator. Pyrotechniq regularly performs nationally, regionally at the Sukhava Bodhe Festival and locally as sponsors of the Chicago Full Moon Jam held at Foster Street Beach each month.

Series tuition is $150, which includes all props and materials. Drop-ins to the first two sessions are welcome for $25 per class. Preregistration and prepayment is required to reserve your space.

Participants must be 18 years of age or older. The class requires a minimum of 4 students to run. Sign up now to help ensure the class runs and see you there!
